Frequently Asked Questions
How do I choose an EMDR therapist?
It is important to know that there are currently three levels of training/expertise for EMDR therapists.
Level 1 – Basic Training - Mental health professionals must first complete Basic Training, which allows them to work as an EMDR therapist. However, at present there are no additional requirements for those with Basic Training, meaning that the knowledge and expertise of these therapists is highly variable and largely dependent on how much additional professional development they complete. The majority of EMDR therapists in Canada are at this level.
Level 2 - Certified EMDR Therapist, this requires significantly more training, and ongoing professional development.
Level 3 - Approved Consultant; these individuals are able to train others in EMDR. I am presently a Certified EMDR Therapist and “Consultant-in-Training” (working towards Approved Consultant status).
Do I require a referral to become a client?
No, you do not require a referral to become a client, but if you have a benefit provider, I encourage you to review your benefit information to see if they cover Registered Psychologists and if they have any stipulations for you receiving service.
